The Great Believers

The Great Believers

This book is one of my all time favorites. I listened to Brit Bennett on @thestackspod a couple of weeks ago talk about how the ending of this story just lands so perfectly, but that it emotionally wrecks you. And she is right. I personally loved it, and I feel like a lot of you would too. I can’t review it, because I have been trying and I keep erasing the things I write. LA friends if you want to borrow this let me know! Check out the next slide for a short synopsis.

Sidenote: I’m playing around with different backgrounds in my house. We don’t have much natural lighting so I go outside a lot to take pics since my patio garden is pretty. I’m also bad when it comes to editing photos because I know I overthink it too much. I don’t know how y’all take such pretty photos, definitely not my strong suit but I’m glad I get to enjoy yours! (also please don’t feel like you have to say my photos are nice, I love them bc they are mine. I know my strengths and that ain’t it, lol)

Anyways! Go read this book! Happy Tuesday everyone. #alwaysbereading #ilovebooks#bookaddict#bookaholic #knowhistory #thegreatbelievers #bookstagram #booksthatmakeyoucry

Puerto Rico Strong

Puerto Rico Strong

I love graphic novels. To me the art form can be truly transcendent and pack an emotional punch. Comics are political. Political cartoons have been around since the beginning of politics! There is so much they can accomplish and this collections of short stories is no different. This comic anthology was created by multiple Puerto Rican artists and writers. These are all stories about Puerto Rico and the only complaint I have is that some are too short and could’ve used more time, but given the circumstances surrounding its creation time was probably of the essence to get these stories out. Nevertheless if you don’t know much about Puerto Rico or its history this is a good place to start. Plus, all the profits from this anthology go to United Way of Puerto Rico’s Early Childhood Relief Program. ⠀

Puerto Rico holds a special place in my heart. My grandmother was Puerto Rican. My father was born in Puerto Rico. I’ve been lucky to visit a few times growing up. And although I grew up eating asopao and homemade flan, once my grandmother passed it felt like that part of my identity was severed. We were supposed to go to Puerto Rico this winter to spread her ashes, a family reunion my cousins and I really want to happen, but it looks like it is just not in the cards. Thankfully the family I have still residing there is doing okay. They are all safe and healthy. But I hope I can see my great Aunt and Uncle before it’s too late…⠀

I miss her so much. I hope my family and I can go back one day and fulfill her final wishes. I’ll be so happy to show my son that part of himself too and maybe reclaim a part of myself that at times feels lost. ⠀

Also shoutout to @altversela for putting this on my radar. They are an awesome comic book and table top gaming store in LA you should support if you can. #graphicnovel #puertorico #puertoricostrong #hurricanrelief #hurricanereliefpuertorico #hurricanerelieffundraiser #bookstagram #booklover #bookaholic #knowhistory #decolonizeyourbookshelf #comicbooks #comics #ilovereading #alwaysbereading #supportsmallbusiness #independentbookstore #supportlocal #supportlosangelessmallbusiness

Real Life

Real Life

Brandon Taylor

“Beauty is a kind of unrelenting cruelty. It takes the truth, hones it to a terrifying keenness, and uses it to slice us to the bone.” -Real Life, Brandon Taylor. ⠀

This is a story of a Black, queer man from Alabama living in the Midwest trying to obtain his PhD. ⠀

This book. Wow. It took sometime to get into bc of the scientific language (I think that was on purpose though to show the reader how mundane and difficult life a grad student can be) but Brandon Taylor’s writing made my heart swell and break into a thousand pieces over and over again. Just look at the sentence. This novel is truly a work of art. Brandon Taylor is a gifted writer. This is a debut novel so he is definitely one to watch.

Boundless

Boundless

Jillian Tamaki

Boundless by Jillian Tamaki is a graphic novel filled with short stories.

I have never read a graphic novel like this one in more ways than one. The short story format was really cool. The stories were all so strange and cerebral. Some were actually quite funny. The one that sticks out the most was about a different Facebook where you have access to another version of yourself, living a different life in a parallel universe. I think about it a lot and the social commentary that surrounds it. Especially because the ending was so strange. ⠀

I really liked this a lot. It definitely helped push me out of a reading slump since it wasn’t too heavy handed but it was just enough to stick. I also really loved the idea of short stories in this form. I’d like to see/read more of this. I’ll be on the lookout for this artist’s work in the future. ⠀

The Vanishing Half

The Vanishing Half

Brit Bennett

“There were many ways to be alienated from someone, few to actually belong”

This book is definitely worthy of the hype. I couldn’t put it down. The characters lodge themselves into your mind and don’t let go. Just like The Mothers, I’m sure I’ll think about this one often. I thought about these characters for many days after putting it down and I’m sure I will continue to think about them as time goes on. ⠀

Brit Bennet’s writing really steals the show. There is something about how she writes that I can’t quite put my finger on. Her language flows off the page and it’s so gorgeous in its deceptive simplicity that you have to pay attention. Everything was so well crafted you get sucked right in. I can’t wait for her next book. ⠀

Fairest

Fairest

Meredith Talusan

“When people looked at me and only saw a white person, I understood that being white wasn’t actually better, that I only coveted whiteness because of what I associated it with-wealth, education, and beauty. But for someone like me, whose whiteness was literally skin deep, who did not have any actual European ancestry, to be perceived as white could only mean whiteness is nothing more than illusion.”

This was an amazing story and one that is truly unique. Meredith Talusan tells her story with deep insight and no stone unturned. She grew as a young boy in rural Philippines. She was considered a “sun child,” or one with albinism and eventually came to graduate from Harvard. Because of this her perspective on whiteness and gender was incredibly interesting. Towards the end when she discusses her decision to transition I found her insights very profound. ⠀

Pick this up especially if you love to read memoirs. I really enjoyed this one. #filipinobookstagrammer #asianamericanreaders #books #transmemoir #readlgbtqstories #supportlgbtqwriters #fairest #meredithtalusan #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #diversifybookstagram #diversifyyourbookshelf #ownvoices
