King and The Dragonflies

I read this book for the #welovemglit book club and I’m hoping I can make it to the meeting tomorrow. This is my second book by Kacen Callender and I just love them so much. One thing so many adult writers and just adults in general do is talk down to kids because they feel they’re not ready to talk about tough topics, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m guilty of this as well and I’m trying to do better because the kids deserve so much more than what the world is currently offering. This is the story of King, a young Black child figuring out who he is while dealing with the grief he carries over the sudden death of his brother. We need more Queer representation in Middle Grade novels, we especially need more featuring Queer BIPOC children. This is one I’m definitely adding to my shelf and if you teach middle grade or middle school children you should get it too. Now excuse me while I purchase every book Kacen Callender has written….
