Incredible T-Shirt
I bought this incredible t-shirt from @sistahscfi and it’s now become a staple piece of my wardrobe. I can’t wait to wear in the classroom one day and get asked by my students “Who are those people?” So I can happily explain that these are the first names of Black women science fiction-fantasy writers that one day you will come to know and love. ⠀
⠀
I’ve always been a huge science fiction fantasy lover. One thing that bothered me though was that the characters were always white and never represented the multi racial world I lived in. Sometimes I would defy the authors’ character descriptions and imagine myself or people I loved in place of the ones on the pages. But this was because I was largely reading books by white, cisgender, heterosexual men. I started noticing that the genre didn’t love me or the people I loved so I branched out and haven’t looked back. ⠀
⠀
Since then my reading life has become so enriched and beautiful. I have been transported through time and space and have gone on adventures beyond my wildest dreams. I have also looked to view our society and world through new perspectives and those lessons will stay with me forever. Thanks to @sistahscifi and @brisbookish for creating this summer photo challenge. I have SO enjoyed following along.
